European calls

How to Answer a European Call to Tackle Cancer: Frequently asked questions

The European Commission is committed to combating cancer through two pivotal initiatives: Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP) and the Cancer Mission. The overarching objective is to improve 3 million lives from cancer by 2030.

By taking part in these initiatives, you’re not only enhancing your own research and projects but also contributing to a larger, continent-wide effort to beat cancer. Let’s make a difference together.

EBCP is a comprehensive action plan designed to assist, synchronise, and enhance the efforts of EU Member States at every phase of the cancer journey. It’s built on four pillars, or key action areas, where the EU can offer the most impactful contributions:

  1. Prevention: Reducing cancer risk factors
  2. Early Detection: Improving screening and early intervention
  3. Diagnosis and Treatment: Enhancing care and medical solutions
  4. Quality of Life: Focusing on patients and survivors

Learn More About EBCP

In conjunction with EBCP, the Cancer Mission has been set into motion as a research-centric initiative, informed by the collective input of citizens, patients, and stakeholders from Member States. Its mission is two-fold:

  • Improve the survival and quality of life for cancer patients.
  • Significantly reduce the overall impact of cancer in the EU.

The initiative has distilled its approach into 13 actionable recommendations.

Discover the Cancer Mission

Both EBCP and the Cancer Mission are sustained through a broad funding umbrella that spans various policy areas. As of 2021, €4 billion has been allocated for cancer-related actions. This includes €1.25 billion from the future EU4Health program and additional support from Horizon Europe Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, and the Digital Europe program.

To tap into these European initiatives, you’ll need to apply via specific calls for proposals or tenders, each with its own set of eligibility criteria and application requirements.
